Ready to pick up on some Spanish from the comfort of your own sofa? Here are five of the best Spanish shows on Netflix available right now:
- La Casa de Papel (Money Heist)
A firm favourite, La Casa De Papel is available to watch completely in Spanish with English subtitles, getting you used to hearing Spanish conversation and pronunciation.
This thrilling show sees a group of complex, sometimes loveable criminals rob the Royal Mint of Spain. Full of twists, turns and packed with exciting action scenes this show will keep you on the edge of your seat whilst getting you immersed in exciting, fast-paced dialogue.
With 2 seasons, and 31 episodes to get stuck into La Casa De Papel includes all the elements an award-winning show should: suspense, action, drama, and romance all in addition getting you familiar with the Spanish Language. This definitely qualifies it as one of the best Spanish shows on Netflix.
- El Chapo
The series “El Chapo” is based on the life of drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, following him from his early days in the Guadalajara Cartel to his leading of the Sinaloa Cartel.
Also packed with suspense, twists and a gripping storyline, this is perfect for those looking to become familiar with the language and dialect of Latin America. There are a few English dialogue inclusions, which can make the Spanish slightly less overwhelming. In addition to this, the subtitles provide typical Spanish descriptions, and added bonus for those working on their adjectives and sentence structure!
- Gran Hotel (Grand Hotel)
Coming in at position three in our list of the best Spanish shows on Netflix, we can’t resist a period drama! We’re back to mainland Spain for our next suggestion, “Gran Hotel”. Compared to the likes of Downton Abbey, this third suggestion takes on a much slower pace, excellent for those beginning their Spanish learning journey.
On the lookout for his missing sister, Julio Olemdo, travels to the hotel in order to get answers on her whereabouts. A gripping, ever-evolving storyline will keep you hooked whilst a slower pace will give you a chance to fully understand the dialogue and pick up on new words.
The Spanish used is also more formal, allowing viewers to get a good indication of the pronunciation. One drawback, however, is that because it is a period drama, much of the Spanish used is not applicable today. This doesn’t mean that you can’t indulge anyway, though!
- Tiempos de Guerra (Morocco: Love Times Of War)
Set during the Rif War, a group of nurses from Madrid are sent to open up a hospital in Morocco. Another period piece, set in the 1920’s, this series mixes romance with the harsh reality of war.
As with Gran Hotel, this show takes on a slower pace, giving you time to fully understand the dialogue and pick up additional vocabulary. Due to the setting the language is, again, very formal. The great thing about this is that your pronunciation practice becomes a lot clearer.
- Vis A Vis (Locked Up)
Our fifth and final recommendation is a captivating series called Vis a Vis or “Locked Up” in English. A woman is imprisoned after committing crimes on behalf of her boss, with whom she is in love with.
This show is a good one to watch if you’re curious to pick up on some Spanish slang and a few words that are thrown around in Spanish prisons.
Not only is this show going to be an entertaining way for you to pick up on some Spanish dialogue, but the storyline is also pretty gripping and will have you hooked very quickly.
Taking Spanish courses is always the number one way to go if you’re wanting to properly learn the marvellous language. However, watching any of our recommendations from what we consider the best Spanish shows on Netflix, is also a fun way to supplement your learning and progress.
All we can say is, enjoy your future Netflix binges – we’ll see you on the other side!
