How To Learn Flamenco During Covid-19
When you think of how to learn Flamenco, traditionally you might have thought of physical studios with specialist wooden flooring, wall-length mirrors so you can check your footwork and the sound of other dancers around you.
And while that’s still very much the case, if this year has taught us anything it’s that you can do nearly anything at home. Include learning Flamenco!
So we’ve put some ideas together if you’re not sure how to learn Flamenco in a Covid-focused world and are in love with the idea of physical classes. And if learning from home is more your speed, we’ve got you covered as well! We’ll cover understanding what you need for online Flamenco classes and how to choose the right one.
If you’re eager to start, why not take a look at our online Flamenco classes – we cater to all levels!
Check Your Local Area For Socially Distanced Classes
Depending on your area, you might be able to find a class to join that’s also taking the necessary precautions during this time. You want to make sure you’re learning with a Flamenco or Latin Dance school that takes your safety, as well as your enjoyment, seriously.
In the London area? Make sure you check out our incredible Flamenco classes – we even run an Introduction to Flamenco course for complete beginners eager to learn. It’s perfect for that first taste of this traditional dance!
Here are a few things to be mindful of when reading the small print if you do find a local class that looks promising:
Are The Classes Socially Distanced?
Although the rule of meeting up with less than 6 people only applies to social gatherings, there are strict considerations when it comes to exercising in smaller or enclosed spaces. So it’s important that you should only look at Flamenco classes which are operating with this in mind.
Track & Trace
Having a clear Track & Trace system in place is one of the easiest and universal ways that organisations and institutions can operate physical classes with a little more normalcy, while still ensuring that safeguarding their attendees is a main priority.
The NHS Track & Trace app is easily downloadable, but the Flamenco school should also have their own Track & Trace procedures in place – like all our in-person classes do! – to ensure peace of mind and safety for all dancers.
Hygiene Procedures
Now it’s even more important than ever that shared equipment is limited, as this significantly reduces the chance of unnecessary contact between people who don’t interact on a daily basis. If a class is operating and allows you to bring all your own kit, or doesn’t necessitate the use of ‘official’ Flamenco wear, then you know that this Flamenco school is adhering to Covid guidelines, and has your safety in mind!
Learning Flamenco Online
Of course, when thinking about how to learn Flamenco in the current climate, the best answer is to just learn at home!
Online Flamenco classes are swiftly appearing all over the place – but this presents another set of questions: how do you know which is the best course for you?
Choosing The Right Level
If this is the first time that you’ll be trying your hand (or feet, rather) at Flamenco then something like our online Introduction to Flamenco class would be perfect! Classes like this let you dip your toes, literally, into the skills involved in this gorgeous, traditional skill and let you experience it for yourself without the pressure of having to book a whole set of classes.
Of course, if you’ve had a little experience of dancing Flamenco before but are feeling a little rusty, getting involved with a Flamenco for beginners course is the next best step – pun intended.
What Equipment You Need
Because you’re learning at home, all you actually need when thinking about how to learn Flamenco online is a good bit of space – outside, if the weather’s nice, or in your living room will do – and a good internet connection.
And while Flamenco is normally a very intense, and sometimes loud, dance, a good Flamenco school will have modified their online Flamenco classes to ensure that you can immerse yourself in this skill without having to worry what the neighbours think!
- Comfortable shoes that protect or support your ankles
- Good internet
- A little space – to really get into it
And that’s it! The rest is up to the professional teachers to give you incredible course content. (Have we mentioned all our Flamenco instructors are professional dancers?…)
How To Learn Flamenco? Get Involved!
When thinking about how to learn Flamenco in this ever-changing situation we find ourselves in, it’s important you know what to expect from your classes. You should be able to expect incredible, high quality course content from your online Flamenco the same as if you were attending physical classes!
And your physical classes should be operating with close attention to the necessary procedures to ensure maximum Covid-compliance. Not only for your safety but also for your enjoyment of this amazing skill!
